OceanBase Released Version 4.0 to Lower Technology Barrier for SMEs

On August 10, OceanBase announced the launch of OceanBase 4.0, which is also known as Paetica, at its 2022 Annual Conference, marking a key milestone on the company’s product development roadmap. Starting from this version, OceanBase can be deployed on a 4C8G machine as a distributed SQL database without compromising performance. 

The newly launched OceanBase 4.0 is the first in the industry to support the standalone deployment of a distributed database, taking into account the scalability of the distributed architecture and the performance advantages of the standalone architecture.

Some of the new version’s benefits include lower deployment costs, reduced operations and maintenance (O&M) complexity and flexible scenario applications. Additionally, OceanBase 4.0 breaks the long-standing limitation and makes distributed databases available to all businesses, not just big enterprises. It significantly lowers the barrier for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to use distributed databases and allows SMEs to enjoy the quality performance of distributed database at a low cost.

OceanBase 4.0 can run smoothly on the world's smallest computer (Raspberry Pi), as well as ordinary personal computers, making distributed database readily available anywhere. 

OceanBase 4.0 can also reduce the Recovery Time Objective (RTO) from 30 seconds to less than 8 seconds in almost all situations. This is the result of adopting a brand new leader election protocol and a sophisticated heartbeat detecting mechanism. If a failure occurs, the Recovery Point Objective (RPO) will be zero. 

OceanBase also announced the launch of OceanBase Cloud globally at the conference. The cloud database is easy to use, miniaturized, requires lower costs, and has significantly fewer barriers for customers. OceanBase Cloud can be adapted to more cloud vendors as an addition to Alibaba Cloud. 

OceanBase Community Edition 4.X will be miniaturized and will support a minimum of 4 cores, 8 GB, allowing more developers to use the database at a lower threshold. Its compatibility with MySQL will also be further enhanced.
